A downloadable hallucination

You and your partner were travelling to Los Angeles when something took you and trapped you in a prison of your own minds. It reformed the prison into a reflection of LA. Until you complete the trials, you will be trapped forever inside of the hallucination.

LA Hallucination is a diceless 2 player tabletop role-playing game based on the Carly Rae Jepsen album from 2015  E•MO•TION (specifically named for the song "LA Hallucinations"). To play you will need:

  • something to write things down with
  • the album E•MO•TION by Carly Rae Jepsen

You begin your time inside the hallucination as something formless, with very little defining your identity. As you face trials (each trial based on a song from E•MO•TION) you and your partner create and discover what makes up your identity. Only once you have finished your trials can you finally be free.

This game was made for the Carly Rae Jepcember jam.

If you have a good time playing or just reading this game I would appreciate it a lot if you left a rating/review or let me know on twitter!

UPDATE: Now includes "LA Hallucination: Side B", an expansion that adds more trials based on songs from E•MO•TION: Side B and a new ending. The new trials are messier and more self-indulgent than those in the base game and are less focused on the setting of LA. It's more focused on developing the hallucination as a setting/character while still keeping the relationship between player characters as the main focus. If that sounds interesting to you, that's great! There are instructions for how to use the expansion in the PDF. If it doesn't sound interesting to you, you can ignore it and just play the base game. Either way I hope you enjoy your time with the hallucination.

Beautiful, inspired, wonderful. This is the first review i'm ever writing for a game on this platform and it feels like the least I can do.  If the concept made you crack even the tiniest smile, please give it a shot. It is more than worth your time

So, this is not just a Carly Rae Jepsen concept ttrpg, but it's one of multiple Carly Rae Jepsen ttrpgs, and I'm completely on board.

It's two players, it has the potential to get messy, and you need the album E•MO•TION as a randomizer, but if you pitch the game concept to a friend and their first reaction is "hahaha yes", you're probably good to go.

Gameplay-wise, you're both going through a series of scenes/trolley-problems, regaining a piece of your identity each time. It's diceless, and the idea of re-collecting yourself as progression is cool. There's also a distinct feel to the setting and an expansion that adds to the metaplot.

Honestly, I think the only thing I would change here is maybe house-ruling that you can hear the corresponding song in the background of each scene, only tinny and distant and kind of subliminal.

If you like surreal games, or you want to read something that should probably be a joke game except it's super well designed, or you like small-scope emotion-and-character-focused stuff, definitely check this out.

If you're uneasy with two-player games, you don't feel comfortable with safety mechanics, or you need crunch, this may not be your thing.

Overall, I'd recommend this on its premise alone, but its writing and execution are excellent as well, and it's a really cool read.
